Latte Art Course or an App? How to Choose
Thinking about an online latte art course? Here is what a course gives you, what an app gives you, and how to choose if you practise at home.

Choose a class if you want a person to watch you pour, and choose an app like Pour Score if you have your own machine and want to practise at home most days.
If you search for a latte art course, you will find video courses, live classes and certificate programmes. Some are short, some are long, and some are free. An app is a different thing, and it suits a different person. Here is how to tell which one you need.
What a course gives you
Courses vary a lot, so check the details of any you are considering. In general, they offer:
- Structured lessons in a fixed order, often as videos with quizzes.
- A tutor or a live class, on some courses, where someone sees what you are doing and tells you what to change.
- A certificate, on some courses. Whether it is a certificate of completion or an accredited qualification depends on the provider, so read what it says.
- A wider barista syllabus, on many courses: espresso extraction, café workflow and equipment, as well as milk and latte art.
If you want to work in a café, need a certificate for a CV, or want a person to correct your technique, a course is the right choice.
What an app gives you
A practice app is for the home barista with their own machine, who wants to get better at pouring between lessons. What Pour Score does:
- Guides each pour step by step, with a path that draws across your cup in time with the pour.
- Shows your jug angle live, in degrees, so you can see when you are in range.
- Lets you rehearse the movement dry with an empty jug, so you spend no milk while you practise.
- Teaches nine patterns in order, from a monk's head to a swan, in five tiers that you earn from real pours.
What Pour Score is not
Pour Score is not a course. It has no certificate and no accreditation, and no live tutor. It does not cover espresso extraction or running a café bar. It is a practice coach for milk and latte art at home.
Five questions to help you choose
- Do you need a certificate? If yes, choose a course.
- Do you want a person to watch you pour? If yes, choose a live class.
- Do you have a machine and a jug at home, and want to pour most days? An app fits.
- Do you want to learn espresso extraction and café skills too? Choose a broader course.
- Do you just want to get your first heart to hold its shape? Either works. The thing that matters most is how often you practise.
The part that matters more than the choice
Learning latte art takes repetition. People who pour most days improve faster than people who pour once a week, whatever they learn from. Whichever route you take, plan for a little practice every day, and rehearse the movement without milk when you can.
